When the Apple Watch was released in 2015, Apple unwittingly ushered in the era of rose gold — a light, tasteful pink color that has now spread across a range of devices and even influenced the palettes of other companies' gadgets.

Rose gold isn't just a fad, though — pink gadgets are here

Apple wasn't the first company to put out pink electronics; in fact, the Motorola Razr V3, the phone that seemingly half the population owned between 2005 and 2008, had an aggressively pink color option. The hot pink Razr laid the groundwork for a fuchsia future.

Five years after the Razr went out of style, Samsung released a middle-of-the-road, Crayola pink Samsung Galaxy Note 3. While it wasn't quite the same shade as rose gold, it still stands as a landmark gadget leading the pink-splosion.

After the Apple Watch dropped two years later, the barrage of pink really began. Apple followed the rose gold smartwatch with a rose gold iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, then an iPad Pro, iPhone SE and even a Macbook. 

Among those, other companies started hopping on the pinkwagon: Samsung came out with pink Galaxy S7 and St Edge phones, Oppo released a pink R7S and Sony dropped a pink Zperia Z5 Compact.

Even Beats got in on the pink party with a pink pair of Beats Solo 2.

With so many gadgets coming in some variety of pink, it's hard to ignore the popularity boom. Of course, as electronics become ingrained in society more and more, they become part of people's identities, and if your identity shouts "pink," you've got a lot to choose from.

Apple updates its 12-inch MacBook with faster chip and rose gold, but no extra USB

If you've been holding out for a new MacBook, Apple's finally answered your call. Maybe.

The 2016 update to the 12-inch MacBook that debuted last year is now available to buy, but note that it's more of a spec bump than anything else.

The updated 12-inch MacBook is still $1,299 in the US and £1,049 in the UK for the entry-level model with the same 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD. The $1,599/£1,299 step-up Core M5 version still features 8GB RAM and a 512GB SSD, too. But the MacBooks get improved Intel HD Graphics 515, faster PCIe flash storage and an optional extra upgrade to a 1.3GHz Core M7 processor.

Most importantly, the new MacBooks don't add any extra ports. There's still just a single USB-C port. But you can get the MacBook in rose gold now, just like the iPhone, Apple Watch and 9.7-inch iPad Pro.

That single port was one of the few ongoing issues cited when my colleague Dan Ackerman recently declared that, despite its limitations, the 2015 version of the 12-inch MacBook had become his favorite on-the-go laptop.

The Apple Store has now been updated to offer the new models, which replace the 2015 models.MacBook Airs and MacBook Pros aren't getting updates today, but the Airs now offer 8GB of RAM as standard for the same price as before, instead of what used to be a $100 upgrade from 4GB.
