    Intelligent alarm systems could reduce risks and costs

    The alarm of the future may be able to warn workers about incidents before they happen and make sure only the people that can fix the problem are informed.
    Instead of an alarm alerting the entire factory and creating lots of confusion, GE Digital senior product marketing manager, Alicia Bowers, sees a world where alarms are informative, preventive, and not annoying.
    As part of GE Digital’s industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) push, it wants factories to install analytics for its machines. From there, the machine needs to be able to alert a centralized system, which will find the closest engineer able to fix the issue using geo-location.
    GE Digital has built a system that does most of that, though more complex analytics, like machine self-assessment, is still in early days.

    Engineers may receive notifications on a mobile device from the system, detailing what machine needs repaired, how to fix it, and a risk assessment of the situation.
    Having systems that can identify issues could save factories millions in repair costs over the years, not to mention the rise in productivity from a significant reduction in machine failures.
    “Consider temperature monitoring on a piece of equipment. If the temperature exceeds the upper control limit, an alarm is activated. Traditionally, an operator would now react to the alarm. Analytics have made it possible to evolve from being reactionary to predicting when the event will occur and taking steps in advance,” said Bowers in Automation World.
    Businesses are interested in IIoT, but only 25 percent in a recent survey are in the deployment stage. Many are worried that staff won’t understand the analytics, which will require the business to employ higher paid engineers.

    How Cellphone Camera Images Can Fool Machine Vision

    Finding some grainy imperfections in your smartphone photo is an unavoidable reality of digital photography (especially in low light conditions), but it’s not going to stop you from recognizing who or what you’ve photographed. However, that might not be true of machines that use Google’s computer vision software to “see.”
    According to a new report, Google researchers found that the accuracy of the company’s image recognition algorithms often failed when they were challenged with grainy, less-than-perfect pictures.
    We’re already using machine vision for all sorts of purposes, including facial recognition, image identification, and self-driving vehicles. This study looked at Google’s software specifically, which is one of the best machine vision systems out there. It suggests that there could be real limitations to a growing number of such systems, which is important to deal with as we decide how much to trust the devices that technology makers claim can “see” for us.

    Adversarial images aren’t a new problem in the field of machine learning. These pictures, which have a specifically engineered type of grainy noise, have been used to throw a wrench into image classification software: Changes to an image that would be just about imperceptible to a human eye, like blurry pixelation, can totally mess up a computer’s ability to correctly identify what it is.
    “It was found out, a few years ago, that it is possible to modify the input image and it will confuse the image recognition system,” said Alexey Kurakin, one of the authors of the report and researcher at Google Brain, who spoke to me over the phone from California.
    “Let’s say an image of an elephant,” he continued. “You modify the image slightly with this noise that is hard for the human eye to see very well. [If] you give it to your image recognition system, now the image recognition system thinks it’s no longer an elephant, but an airplane or a car,” even though a human eye likely wouldn’t be confused by the same trick.
    Before now, this vulnerability had only been tested by uploading an image to the classification system directly. Kurakin and his team tried something different. They took cellphone pictures of printed images that were increasingly modified with that special kind of noise—random data that, again, would not stop us from seeing an elephant, but would throw the computer vision system for a loop.
    He and his team found that the software still misclassified items, in the most noisy cases as often as 97 percent of the time.
    According to the paper, the cellphone images, which were input into the Inception 3 neural network (which is Google’s really, really smart image identification algorithm), were captured “without careful control of lighting, camera angle, distance to the page.”
    In other words, these images looked a whole lot like what would be produced not in the lab, for research purposes, but out in the real world.
    “Prior to my paper, they directly fed the image to neural network,” said Kurakin. “This is important because, if you have a file with the image, you have fine-grain control over each pixel.” In other words, previous research had generated the noise in the individual pixels and then let the machine analyze the picture.
    Kurakin and his team have now shown that a snapshot from a regular camera with no modifications has the same worrisome effect.
    To get over this hurdle, scientists will need to tinker with both the image recognition software itself, and the data that’s used to train it. Maybe machines can be become familiar with flawed images that way.
    Until then, it’s a reminder that while we begin to realize the incredible promise of new machine learning technology, it still has fundamental weaknesses that could be exploited.

    Avoid the sting of a dead phone battery at the end of a long day by packing an ultra-portable USB battery pack.
    We like the TravelCard Charger because it’s nearly the size of a credit card, but quickly zaps 30 to 50 percent back into the battery of a large smartphone. Though not the absolute smallest or most powerful charger we tested, it has the best balance of all the important features among the 20 we tested, and a reasonable price.

    Sony posts $205M profit as downsized mobile business stops bleeding cash

    Sony posted a slim ¥21.2 billion ($205 million) profit for its Q1 2016. That’s down on the ¥82.4 billion profit it carded this time last year, but in general the quarter was a mixed bag of positives and negatives following the impact of cost-cutting initiatives.
    We already knew the firm would take somewhat of a hit this quarter after it warned of the impact that the Kumamoto earthquake had on its manufacturing operations nearby. Revenue for the three-month period did reflect that, coming in at ¥1.613 trillion ($15.662 billion), down 11 percent annually.
    Other factors besides the quake, Sony said, included the strong yen — a factor Nintendo cited in its earnings yesterday — “the deterioration in investment performance” of its Sony Life business, and the downsizing of its smartphone business, which brought in 33 percent less revenue than one year previous.
    There’s a positive side to Sony Mobile’s performance however — it is now at breakeven. Slowing growth and increased competition in the smartphone market had weighed on Sony’s previous financials, with the smartphone business alone responsible for a $544 million loss in the last financial year. So it is quite notable that its mobile communications division posted a very slender ¥400 million ($4 million) operating profit for the quarter.
    That, Sony said, was down to tactical withdraws from tougher markets, and shift away from mid-range phones where competition is fiercest, towards higher-end devices with better margins. Restructuring also boosted its home entertainment and sound unit, operating income for which increased 85 percent annually to ¥20.2 billion ($197 million) despite revenue dropping seven percent over the period.
    Amid those changes Sony’s PlayStation business, which surpassed 40 million consoles sold to date in March, stood.
    Sony’s games and network unit — which includes PlayStation — was the stellar performer, accounting for the most revenue across the firm and over 75 percent of total Sony profits. It posted an operating profit of ¥44 billion ($427 million), up 126 percent year-on-year, on revenue of ¥330.4 billion ($3.2 billion) for the quarter, up 14.5 percent.
    That impressive rise, Sony put down to increased PS4 game and console sales, as well as some cost reductions made internally, including lower marketing spend — which makes sense for a console first launch in 2013. Sony is tapping into the rise of VR with PlayStation VR, its $399 take on things which is due to arrive in mid-October. Given that alternatives like Oculus require a suitable PC rig to work, PlayStation VR could make sense for many who don’t want additional cost or hassle.
    As mentioned at the top, many Sony units were impacted by the recent earthquake. Its imaging component business took a 26 percent revenue dip year-on-year, the semiconductor business was down 23 percent, and its component business saw revenue fall 23 percent.
    Sony Pictures carded a ¥10.6 billion ($103 million) loss which Sony blamed on currencies, despite some strong box office hits like Angry Birds, and revenue in its music business was up nine percent year-on-year.

    Single-propeller 'drone' flies when you throw it like a frisbee

    A drone, or quadcopter as it's technically called, typically has four propellers to generate enough thrust to let it hover in the air. The propellers are arranged in such a way to counterbalance the weight of the drone itself.
    Researchers at the Institute for Dynamic Systems and Control at ETH Zurich have created a new kind of flying machine (technically, not a drone) that only needs one blade to fly.
    The flying machine is called the Mono spinner and is billed as the "simplest, controllable, flying machine in existence" since it lacks actuators and aerodynamic surfaces. It only has one moving part: the rotating propeller.
    The three-person research team (Weixuan Zhang, Mark Mueller and Raffaello D'Andrea) said the Monospinner was born after they asked "what is the minimum number of moving parts necessary for controlled flight?"

    The researchers have provided an in-depth look at the math and science that went into getting its flying machine into the air here. The gist: "An unconventional equilibrium is found by analyzing the vehicle’s dynamics. For a certain constant angular speed and propeller force, the Monospinner is able to remain substantially in one position. Feedback control keeps the vehicle near this equilibrium."
    To fly it, just throw it into the air like a frisbee:
