    Strava adds a real-time safety feature to its fitness tracking app

    The official promo for Strava’s new beacon feature shows a runner attempting to outpace a giant boulder – something I suspect isn’t too common an occurrence if you’re Indiana Jones or Wile E Coyote. Still, even if you’re not a fictional adventurer or anthropomorphic desert scavenger, accidents can happen when you’re out for a long run, bike ride or other workout.
    Beacon brings safety functionality to the popular fitness social network, offering users real-time location data with a select group of contacts, so friends and family can locate them, should any unforeseen circumstances occur during a workout.

    The feature rolls out today for Strava Premium ($6 a month) users on iOS and Android, letting users add up to three names. Contacts get a text message when the workout begins, featuring a URL that offers live map info, even for those without an account.

    Apple sold its billionth iPhone last week

    It would have been a nice piece of information to share during yesterday’s earnings report, but Tim Cook and Co. were clearly too preoccupied with service revenues and R&D. And hey, no better way to kick off a midweek meeting than a little positive news — particularly if you can carry some of yesterday’s expectation-beating positivity into the following day to help rally the troops.
    iPhone sales may have declined for the quarter, but Apple’s still posting big numbers in the smartphone arena. During an employee meeting in Cupertino this morning, Apple’s CEO announced that the company moved its one-billionth phone last week.
    “We never set out to make the most, but we’ve always set out to make the best products that make a difference,” Cook said, holding number one billion aloft for the crowd, during a not especially understated address. “Thank you to everyone at Apple for helping change the world every day.”
    The news comes a little over two years after Apple was reported to have sold iPhone number 500 million — a milestone it passed without much notice nearly seven years after the launch of the company’s first handset.

    ProGlove brings smart gloves to the factory floor

    It’s not often you hear of a start-up product that emerged from a student working in a car factory.
    But ProGlove’s co-founder Paul Günther’s foray into the startup world was preceded by employment at BMW. During his studies, he was in touch daily with workers on the factory floor. One thing was clear — everyone wore gloves and if these gloves could be made intelligent, they could assist the worker to make their job easier.
    ProGlove develops smart gloves that enable manufacturing and logistics staff to work faster, safer and easier. Process steps can be documented handsfree and the smart glove gives instant feedback to its user.
    Current applications include the hands-free scanning of goods, monitoring and training of workflow sequences, identification of tools and parts to avoid incorrect usage, and documentation of goods and processes. ProGlove has successfully closed its first funding round of $2.2 million in late May, led by Intel Capital, GETTYLAB and Bayern Kapital to support the company as it prepares to launch its smart glove system.
    I met with marketing manager, Tarek Ouertani, to learn more.

    ProGlove seeing a lot of trade fair interest

    The Munich-based company was founded in December 2014 after coming third in the Intel “Make It Wearable” Challenge with the goal to bring wearables in industry environment and make the worker ready for Industry 4.0.
    The glove is based on Intel’s wearables development module Edison and the win came with a helpful $140,000, funds which enabled the founders to delve into hardware prototyping.  Ouertani explained that the gloves are custom-created for factories and workshops where products are assembled by hand.
    Each glove connects over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and includes a rechargeable battery. Every ProGlove combines motion sensors, RFID scanning, and visual and haptic feedback to create a wearable that can be used to train new employees and automatically document a worker’s progress.
    “The use of the ProGlove leads to more efficient processes and processes that lead to more quality, the main drivers of the automotive industry. A good example is when I talked to a worker on the factor floor that was building a small car component that required the assembly of 48 different parts. Each of these had to be sourced, and scanned individually before assembly. He realized that some parts were missing but didn’t know which ones. With the glove, the barcode scanning function means that workers are logging each individual component in order during assembly, meaning they are alerted if they make a mistake or leave something out.”
    Ouertani noted that there had been a lot of interest in the ProGlove at industrial trade fairs, with people saying “Ooh there’s these guys with a glove so you don’t have to scan with a scanner or a bulky ring on your finger.” The glove retails at around $1,300 and includes the access point, module and charger.
    It’s also being tested for online retailers where it can be in an efficient tool in logistical areas such as inbound logistics, packaging and palleting where workers need to handle goods with both hands and stopping to pick up a scanner constantly is an inefficient use of time.
    Ouertani explained that the glove could also solve the issue of documentation in a range of sectors, including the health industry:
    “We’re involved in a research project in health care looking at the needs of personal care attendants. They typically have 30 minutes per patient including washing, dressing and administering medication and part of this process can involve over ten minutes of documenting what they have done. Having a glove to document the steps they have completed means they get an additional ten minutes with their patient, doing their actual work rather than paperwork.”
    I was curious to learn about their challenges as a European hardware startup. As Ouertani said:
    “As a hardware industrial startup, you need more money in the early stages, before your product is market-ready and this can be difficult. Here in Germany, investors are not easy to convince to take a risk with hardware. By comparison, investors in the US take more risks.”
    However there are distinct advantages to running a hardware start up in Germany. “We make products for the automotive industry and there are so many car factories and warehouses situated here, so it’s been great to have easy access to our sector and go visit these places to test things.”
    The ProGlove is manufactured locally, which ensures quality control over each glove. And that emphasizes the need for manufacturing talent here to make the gloves not just to be customers. Ouertani noted:
     “We think that nevertheless how many automatic processes you put in, workers are still a crucial part of the industrial process. Robots cannot substitute everything and wearables devices can be the connection point between humans and systems.”

    China made the best new supercomputer and it uses Chinese chips

    There's a new supercomputer in town, and it has topped every other supercomputer on the planet.
    The new Chinese supercomputer, dubbed the Sunway TaihuLight, was in the first slot on the Top500 list of supercomputers Monday.
    The fact that the Sunway TaihuLight is in China isn't anything special — the previous and now second-best supercomputer on the list is also Chinese. But that one, the Tianhe-2, used chips from Intel, a U.S. company. 
    The Sunway TaihuLight breaks the mold by using all-Chinese architecture, and it hits some impressive benchmarks in doing so.
    As a basis for comparison, Intel's new 10-core processor for home computing sounds positively puny next to the TaihuLight's 10.65 million cores, which is considerably higher than the 560,000 cores of the U.S.'s top supercomputer — Titan, a Cray XK7 system. The Titan is located at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory and is currently ranked third in the Top500. 
    With 10.65 million cores, the new biggest supercomputer in town hits 93 petaflops, or 93 quadrillion calculations per second.
    And with that kind of power, the TaihuLight — on its own — comprises 16.4 percent of the total computing performance on the list, against all 499 other entrants.
    Not only does China's new supercomputer have impressive processing power, it's also surprisingly energy-efficient. A lot of power is expended on RAM, and the TaihuLight uses a smaller amount of RAM than less-powerful computers.
    This is also the first time that the U.S. does not have the most supercomputers on the Top500 list. China now leads the list with 167 entries, including the top two, while the U.S. is in second place with 165 computers.
    It's possible that the U.S. could bounce back, as Intel is expected to announce a new high-level chip at the 2016 International Supercomputer Conference this week.

    Apple pulls latest iOS update from iPads after bricking reports

    Following complaints that the iOS 9.3.2 update has bricked newer iPads, Apple pulled the latest update for the 9.7-inch iPad Pro.
    "We're working on a fix for an issue impacting a small number of iPad units that are receiving an error when trying to update the software," Apple said in a statement to Mashable Friday. "We'll issue an update as quickly as possible."
    While the company did not specify which iPads were affected by the update, multiple outlets have reported that the update is hamstringing the 9.7-inch iPad Pro and not the 12.9-inch version or other Apple devices. 
    Users reported experiencing the error, which prompts the device to display a "connect to iTunes" message that typically occurs when iDevices enter recovery mode, after updating 9.7-inch iPad Pros with iOS 9.3.2 earlier this week, 9to5Mac reported. From there, users encountered an Error 56 message in iTunes, and Apple has advised those who have not yet updated their devices to refrain from doing so, and those unable to restore their devices to contact Apple Support. 
    Several users affected by the update reported having the hardware in their 9.7-inch iPad Pros replaced at Apple's Genius Bars, 9to5Mac reported. 
    Apple did not specify when the iOS re-release would be issued for affected devices and in the meantime 9.7.-inch iPad Pro users have been reverted to iOS 9.3.1. 
    Apple's most recent iOS recall came two months ago when users reported iOS 9.3 was bricking the iPad 2.
