Top 50 emoji tracker show you what's popular in real-time Down Under

When words fail you, emoji your little heart out.

Remember when the Oxford English Dictionary declared "😂 " Word of the Year 2015? It seemed novel at the time but it's only grown in legitimacy since and with it, real-time trackers that log emoji use universally.

But enough universality. A creative agency in Sydney wants to get specific, tracking the use of emojis across the island continent that is Australia, as it happens.
The Works have launched a real-time data tracker to monitor the way Australians use emoji. While tracking the Top 50 live, they've also compiled lists of what emoji the nation is using most to spice up their text life.
Top of the list, unsurprisingly is the cry-laughing yellow face. 😂. Presumably because Australia is a country of jokers. In second place is the anatomically incorrect but well-meaning red heart. ❤️
Agency partner, Douglas Nicol likened the use of emoji with a dialectical evolution of language, saying in a statement, "It's the natural evolution of the language ... In the same way as we have regional dialectics, we are seeing evidence of regional use of particular emoji."

Aside from monitoring which emoji are most frequently shared, the tracker also calculates which state has the widest breadth of emoji use, and which are strongly used just in that state. For example South Australia with it's many vineyards seems to enjoy the red wine emoji, while Canberra (somewhat alarmingly) enjoys the coffee and soon-to-be replaced pistol emoji.
Dr Suresh Sood of University of Technology Sydney's Advanced Analytics Institute, sees emoji has a new medium with an old message. "This is not new but a continuance of expressing oneself through the power of myth as expressed by Joseph Campbell, Jung and Shakespeare," he said.
    Take that, emoji haters.

LONDON — Twitter has a brand new emoji, but it's not what you think.
The deadline for registering to vote in the EU referendum is nigh, and Twitter has launched a new emoji to make sure you don't miss the deadline.
Twitter and the Electoral Commission have teamed up to create the neon tick Twitter emoji which appears when you tweet using the hashtag #EURefReady.
The Electoral Commission wants Twitter users to tweet using the hashtag to encourage their followers to register before the deadline, which falls at midnight UK time on Tuesday 7 June.
This isn't the first time Twitter and Electoral Commission have teamed up. Ahead of the UK General Election in 2015, reminders to register to vote appeared in Twitter users' timelines.
Registration deadline days have proved important in the past. Over 485,000 applications were made on the deadline day for voting in the General Election in 2015.
“Emoji have become essential in how people communicate every day on Twitter, taking on a language of their own all in the space of 140 characters. So we're excited to give people a new, fun way to have their voices heard ahead of June 23rd," Rob Owers, Head of News, Government and Regional Partnerships, Twitter UK said in a statement.
  • “The #EURef is one of the biggest decisions UK voters have been asked to make in decades, so we're keen to ensure people make the most of the live, global conversation unfolding on Twitter to inform their decision," Owers continued.
  • Once the deadline has passed, a new emoji will go live on 8 June, and a neon ballot box emoji will appear when users post the hashtag #EURef.
