Rapper nails all the ways defending blackface is totally wrong

Posted By: Uni logo - 02:08:00
Indigenous Australian rapper Briggs has shut down defenders of blackface on the internet.

It's simple: Blackface is very, very bad.

Yet it's (once again) become the source of outrage Thursday, following the case of an Australian mother dressing her kid up as a famous football player, complete with blackface makeup. Luckily, Yorta Yorta rapper/actor Adam Briggs has broken down just how invalid all defences of the practice are.
The child was dressed to look like Australian rules player Nic Naitanui, who is of Fijian descent, for a school event called Book Week. You're meant to dress as your favourite book character, but that's a different story.
"He wanted to go as his idol Nic Naitanui from the west coast Eagles. I was a little worried about painting him. (So many politically correct extremists these days) ... So I grew a set of balls and painted my boy brown and he looked fanf*ckingtastic," the mother wrote on the Facebook page of blogger Constance Hall, which has since been deleted.
That post attracted the attention of many people, but particularly Briggs, who took to his Facebook and Twitter pages to shut down all those arguments defending blackface.
Briggs took aim at those who criticised him for making it an issue, mainstream Australia's attitudes, and the now ubiquitous White Chicks defence used for blackface.
Yes, the crappy early-00s movie featuring the Wayans brothers dressing up as white women has somehow become an argument for why blackface is okay. Sigh.

Nic Naitanui himself took a more diplomatic approach on Twitter and didn't place any blame on the mother or the child, but hope they would learn from it.
And here's the picture in question. Sorry in advance. Sigh.

Top 50 emoji tracker show you what's popular in real-time Down Under

Posted By: Uni logo - 01:23:00
When words fail you, emoji your little heart out.

Remember when the Oxford English Dictionary declared "😂 " Word of the Year 2015? It seemed novel at the time but it's only grown in legitimacy since and with it, real-time trackers that log emoji use universally.

But enough universality. A creative agency in Sydney wants to get specific, tracking the use of emojis across the island continent that is Australia, as it happens.
The Works have launched a real-time data tracker to monitor the way Australians use emoji. While tracking the Top 50 live, they've also compiled lists of what emoji the nation is using most to spice up their text life.
Top of the list, unsurprisingly is the cry-laughing yellow face. 😂. Presumably because Australia is a country of jokers. In second place is the anatomically incorrect but well-meaning red heart. ❤️
Agency partner, Douglas Nicol likened the use of emoji with a dialectical evolution of language, saying in a statement, "It's the natural evolution of the language ... In the same way as we have regional dialectics, we are seeing evidence of regional use of particular emoji."

Aside from monitoring which emoji are most frequently shared, the tracker also calculates which state has the widest breadth of emoji use, and which are strongly used just in that state. For example South Australia with it's many vineyards seems to enjoy the red wine emoji, while Canberra (somewhat alarmingly) enjoys the coffee and soon-to-be replaced pistol emoji.
Dr Suresh Sood of University of Technology Sydney's Advanced Analytics Institute, sees emoji has a new medium with an old message. "This is not new but a continuance of expressing oneself through the power of myth as expressed by Joseph Campbell, Jung and Shakespeare," he said.
    Take that, emoji haters.

Meanwhile, canoeists in Rio are delivering some amazing action shots

Luuka Jones of New Zealand on her way to cross the finish line at Rio, be a sporting queen and score a silver medal all with a serious game face.

he Olympics aren’t always as glamorous as they seem — especially when it comes to canoeing.

On Thursday, New Zealand's Luuka Jones slipped into second place in the K1 canoe slalom. Photos of the event reveal how physically taxing professional sport is on the individual  — in case you've been fooled by #fitspo advertising.

Sport isn't sexy. It's gruelling, exhausting and as far from a Victoria's Secret commercial as you can get. The K1 canoe slalom is a sterling example of this. In this event, athletes must navigate a 250-meter (83-yard) course covered in poles they can't hit with any part of their body, paddle or canoe. The sport is modelled on the ski slalom but replaces snow with manufactured white water rapids.
The mixing of a traditional obstacle course with the goal of not drowning is perfect for tell-all facial expressions — a timely reminder that this stuff is not for the faint of heart or aquatically challenged.
