    Artisto app is like Prisma for video, turning videos into instant art

    You've probably already seen the magic of Prisma, an app that transforms your photos into artsy images designed to mimic human-created art styles.

    Now an app called Aristo has taken that dynamicto the next logical area, video.
    The app only allows you to take 10 seconds of video, but once that footage is recorded you have access to an array of filters that turn the video into something entirely different. 
    From a simple style like Blue Dream to more elaborate aesthetics like In The Fire (a flame effect) and Neural Art (a surrealist look), the app has already won over an enthusiastic and growing user base. 
    Released by the Russian internet company Mail.ru, Artisto has apparently beaten Prisma to the video space just weeks after Prisma promised a video version of its popular still image app. 
    Nevertheless, the product is buggy and the effects aren't as smooth and detailed as Prisma's still imagery, so Prisma may still have a chance to win this round if it releases a video version soon. 
    The Artisto app is free and available on both iOS and Android.

    BrewArt is an automated brewing system that's like the N

    If you've always wanted to brew your own beer, today is a good day. 
    BrewArt is an Australian personal brewing system that aims to get first-timers making their own brewery quality beer, as Nespresso does with coffee.
    It's a project by Adelaide-based Coopers Brewery and the brainchild of company employees Scott Harris and Paul Burge. The idea began eight years ago, as the popularity of artisan food and drink increased amongst average consumers, especially craft beer.
    "You have people [at home] making their own cheeses, curing their own ham, doing that sort of stuff. At the same time in the beer world you have the explosion of craft breweries," Harris told Mashable Australia
    The guys wanted to create a lifestyle product that would allow people to make beer at home, in the easiest way possible. 
    "We were seeing that people were drinking less, but better. We did some research and thought, okay, there are lots of people who like to drink beer, we think there would be people who would have fun making it as well, so why aren't they doing it?" Harris said.
    The BrewArt hardware consists of two units, a BeerDroid that brews 10 litres (338 oz) of beer, and a 5 litre (169 oz) temperature controlled beer dispenser called the BrewFlo. 
    The BeerDroid has Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing one to adjust and monitor the brewing process with a smartphone app while you're away from home. It'll notify you when the beer is ready to keg or enter storage mode if you've left it sitting for a while, chilling the beer until you're ready
    BrewArt is also selling the ingredients you'll need to make a beer (malts, enhancers, hops and yeast), as well as BrewPrints packages for those who want to make a brew similar to popular beers around the world.
    "Most people in the world want to make a beer that they're used to the first time, like say a Coopers Pale Ale or a Heineken, that's what they know they drink," Harris said. "We've got a BrewAssist section [on the website] that will allow people to find the beer they like and we'll suggest a style."
    For those who are keen to experiment, BrewArt's app also allows for modifications to your beer. You might want a Hefeweizen, but you can use the app to make the brew a touch more bitter or darker to your liking, for example. The ability to experiment will eventually lead some people to create their own beer from scratch, Harris said.
    "What we wanted that's different to things like Nespresso, is we wanted to give users the ability to just push a button — but if they want to play with it, they can," he said.

    BrewArt will initially launch in Australia from mid-July, costing a hefty A$799 for the BeerDroid and A$699 for the BrewFlo. That's an expensive craft beer. 
    Shortly after its launch Down Under, it will hit the U.S. market, where BrewArt will be in competition with similar personal automatic brewing machines making their way to market, such as the iGulu, the Brewie and the larger Brewbot from the UK. 
    Harris believes one of the things that sets the BrewArt apart is its looks. "We've really gone out of way to try to make it look like something you'd be proud to have next to your $2000 coffee machine," he said. Now all they need is George Clooney.

    Art and engineering come together in this incredible new exhibition

    It’s an idea so new that at first it felt impossible. Even those who have been involved since its inception are amazed to see it come to fruition.
    We spoke to some of the collaborators on the project to find out more about how this first-of-its-kind exhibition came to be.

    Ideation: Degrees of Perfect

    What does perfect feel like for you?
    It’s not the same for everyone. But, in reflecting on the question, the team involved with the project noticed one important similarity across their unique visions of perfect: balance.
    For Fluke, president at ASHOP CREW and the lead creative producer on the project, perfect is a balance that allows for creative productivity. He describes it as “having the perfect environment and the perfect elements around you in order to be creative and to be able to express yourself…. It’s the perfect lighting, the perfect sound.”
    “It’s the air that is the perfect temperature; it’s not too hot and not too cold,” answered Kyle Mitchell, associate creative director at GSD&M. “It’s a world where all these things come together to create something brand new.”
    With this in mind, the team set out to create something that would communicate theDegrees of Perfect idea. To do this, the creative team looked to two seemingly opposite worlds and worked to bring them together in harmony.
    “It’s a balance between engineering and the piece of art,” Fluke explains. “We have two completely separate universes that come together to create something unique and present it in the format of an exhibition.”
    The team had a lofty vision for that exhibition: paintings that used air as a medium.
    At first, the idea felt almost too lofty. “One of the biggest challenges for me was the fact that this was just a huge theory. The idea of having a color-changing art piece, forget having a color-changing mural, it was just a big theory that Kyle and me were kicking around.”

    The science

    Any traces of doubt were erased as the dedicated team of specialists got to work, solving one puzzle at a time.
    The paint, designed to react to changing temperatures, was the first part and, surprisingly, the easiest. “It’s super simple. The paint itself is designed to disappear at a certain temperature, and it’s programmed in laboratories. It’s really designed that way chemically. The problem is that it’s not a precise science, so it changes at different temperatures.” Fluke explains.

    In order for this paint to detect the temperature change two things had to be engineered: a heat-detecting canvas and a unique HVAC system.
    “First I asked Fluke what temperatures he needed, that was the most important thing.”Alain Savard, Founder and Owner of Climatisation – premier Lennox dealer, explains, “I took those two temperatures, and we calculated how much time it is going to take to make the panel react.”
    From there, the team tested numerous frames and canvases—small at first, then progressively larger. “We put aluminum in the front and really good insulation in the front’ Alain explains. “We played with it a lot. I don’t know how many [we made].”
    Creating the perfect air was the next challenge. Lennox systems are designed to do exactly this, so the team knew it was possible, but the project called for a completely unique HVAC system.
    “The genius behind this,” Fluke explains, “was that Alain was able to give us a closed circuit, so we’re not wasting any energy. We’re actually recycling the same air over and over again, which is something I had not thought of. That’s where his expertise really came into place, he said, ‘We can’t waste this hot air or cold air; let’s recycle it.’"

    The art

    With the paint, canvas and perfect air in order, the team set out to find artists who were up to the challenge.

    “One of the things that was remarkable was to see the reactions that the [artists] were having when we expressed to them that they were able to add an extra layer to their work.” Fluke tells us.
    “[As artists] we’re essentially telling a story, visually, and one of the main challenges of the visual artist, as a painter, as a muralist, is that you’re trying to tell a story, you’re trying to share an emotion, but you only have one layer.”
    He continues, “There hasn’t been a traditional painting form where you can add a second layer, an animation, so we essentially gave the artist’s 50% more opportunity to express themselves.” Fluke explains. 
    That said, ASHOP CREW and Lennox wanted the crème de la crème: the people who could master this new medium of thermal art and use that second layer to help creatively communicate the Degrees of Perfect idea.
    “We chose very talented people from different areas. We have artists from Montreal, Toronto and a local from L.A.” Fluke explained. “The one thing they have in common is that they’re street artists, they know one surface to a certain extent, which is murals. They’ve all painted live scale murals and they’ve done so much work in the public eye. We wanted to give them an opportunity to take something they’re already doing and bring it to another level, another degree.”
    With the air and the thermal art sorted, there was just one final layer: sound. The team chose recording artist and producer Toro y Moi and starRo to DJ on the night. Not only is Toro y Moi extremely talented and enthusiastic about the project, he is a graphic designer, artist and illustrator himself, so he has a deep understanding of the work that’s gone into the project.

    Someone put glasses on the floor of a museum and people thought it was art

    According to a Twitter Moment from Tuesday night, two pranksters — @TJCruda and @k_vinnn— sneakily left a pair of glasses on the floor of a museum. 
    To clarify, these were just glasses. They were not part of an exhibition.

    Except several passersby thought the spectacles were an installation — and ogled them accordingly.
    To be fair, the solitary glasses looked very striking in their simplicity. 
    And not to get too heady, but pranks seem like pretty solid contenders for performance art. Care to weigh in, Marina Abramović?
    Mashable has reached out to the pranksters for comment. Meanwhile, art remains a mysterious beast.

    Google's new gigapixel camera captures every paint stroke in famous artwork

    Cancel that trip to the Louvre. You'll never get closer to master art works than through Google's freakishly powerful, robotic Art Camera.
    Google's Cultural Institute is filled with hundreds of thousands of artifacts that you can view online, and about 200 of them are gigapixel images of famous works of art. There are, naturally, millions more of such artworks you can see in person museums around the world.

    But now, with its new robotic Art Camera, Google is automating the process of ingesting these works and putting them online, so you'll be able to see even more without leaving the house. Google has announced a new camera and the online availability of 1,000 new gigapixel images on Tuesday via its official blog.
    The device uses sonar and laser to both focus and line up portions of the works, which it photographs bit by bit. Every image captures the colors and brush strokes that went into making each masterwork in astonishing detail. The system automatically composes the thousands of pieces that make up a piece of art into a cohesive whole.

    Online, you can step back virtually from the art to see it in full or zoom in to any section until you are staring at a brush stroke. The effect is especially striking with impressionists works like The Port of Rotterdam by Paul Signac.
    The robotic nature of the new camera means that museums around the world can capture these incredibly detailed images without having to send their artwork outside of the museum and without assistance from Google.
    We want to give museums the tools they need to do this important work, so we're sending a fleet of these cameras from museum to museum around the world—for free," wrote Google Cultural Institute Engineer Ben St. John in the blog post.
    Google couldn't tell us how much the camera costs or what it cost to build, though they did confirm that it is not for sale. They also noted that the Art Camera is available to any Google Cultural Institute partner who already has at least 50 works uploaded to the platform.
