Skyscraper in Shanghai lets visitors walk on glass walkway without handrails

Gulp. This walk is not for the faint-hearted.

On Thursday, the Jinmao Tower in Shanghai opened its glass skywalk to the public. Daredevil visitors can now walk or sit on the glass walkway for up to 30 minutes. 

Here's the catch: there are no handrails to hold onto. Instead, you'll be harnessed to an overhead rail while you move around freely on the 60-metre long walkway.

The 88-story skyscraper stretches 420.5 metres (1,380 feet) into the air, making it the third tallest building in the country.

The glass skywalk sits 340 metres (1,115 feet) above ground and is reported to be the highest handrail-free walkway in the world.

Jinmao Tower's management team told local reporters on Wednesday that this new attraction offers visitors the opportunity to take in sweeping views of the city.

For safety precautions, only a maximum of 15 people are allowed on the skywalk at one time. Management also said that there will always be two safety professionals accompanying visitors to provide supervision and assistance where needed.

Visitors will have to pay 388 yuan ($58) to talk a stroll above the streets of Shanghai.
