Here's your chance to own a piece of automotive history: British supercar maker McLaren Automotive has announced that it will be selling one of the last F1 supercars ever built.
This is momentous for several reasons. First, only 64 F1 road cars were ever produced during the 1993 to 1998 production run. What's more, this one, which was built in 1998, is one of only six made that year.
This one, chassis number 69 was never sold to a private owner. Instead, it was kept in the McLaren collection and maintained by the McLaren Special Operations (MSO) team. Although it has 2,800 miles on the odometer, this one is essentially a brand-new 1998 F1.
First off, the driver sits in the center of the car with two passenger seats flanking him or her on either side, as you might be able to tell from the interior photo. Also, it was the first car of its kind to be constructed from carbon fiber. For those who aren't familiar with the F1, it was more than just a rare 1990s supercar. It broke the supercar mold in many ways.
As for what it will sell for, the sky is truly the limit. British actor Rowan Atkinson, best-known for his role as Mr. Bean, sold his twice-crashed F1 last summer for $12.24 million. Not long after, another 1998 F1 was auctioned for $13.75 million.Perhaps most important, though, is its 627 horsepower 6.1-liter V12 engine , which was an enormous amount of power in the 1990s. With this mountain of horsepower under its body, the F1 was able to break the record for fastest production road-car, hitting 242.8 mph, which is still near the top of the all-time fastest car charts, 23 years later.
So, given the fact that this one has remained in the McLaren collection and is one of the last, I'd wager it'll fetch a bit more than those two. If you'd like to inquire on pricing, you can email McLaren at specialoperations@mclaren.com for further details about McLaren F1 #069
